Lovers in May
There is a tradition in Rhineland, Germany where young men declare their love by cutting down a young birch tree, decorating it with crepe paper, and placing it in their beloved’s front yard (often by tying it to an older, more mature tree). Of course it means that by the end of May, there are a lot of dead trees in people’s yards. This May tree matchmaking custom dates back to the 17th century.
